Many of Stephen's large scale sculptures are commissioned through architects and designers. Working together from the ground level, these pieces are conceptually integrated with the surrounding environs, much as it was during the Renaissance.
One area of exceptional talent lies in his portraiture, where he has the uncanny ability to capture not only the physical likeness but the spirit of the model. His "transformational" sculptures, showing the human figure becoming animal in a highly realistic manner, reflect Native American beliefs and rituals, including his own Cherokee heritage.
